Show Us The Money - You've got £2000 to buy and build a classic Ford to spank on the strip and track days. Can it be done? We find out the hard way so you don't have to.

I have just been given the go-ahead to start looking for Classic Ford's first project car. Am I excited? Damn right, but also a little bit nervous. So many magazine project builds end up unfinished, or don't turn out the way they were planned. I don't want this to be another one of those.

We could have built an ultra-trick, no-expense-spared car as a showcase for the magazine, but instead we felt that it was more appropriate to build something that you or I could do at home on a feasible budget.

So, since driving a classic Ford is far more enjoyable than parking it in a field for a day, we're going to build a budget track day/drag strip car and have some fun with it. We've got £2000 to buy and build the car and we're going to itemise everything to prove we can do it.

But first, we need a suitable car. It's Thursday evening, deadlines are rushing in, I've got until Monday to find one. Let's go!

Where To Look

Classic Ford is a good place to start. Where else are you going to find such a large and varied selection of Fords for sale?

Blatant plug over with, also check out your local free-ads papers (Trade-it, Loot etc) and Internet sites such as autotrader.co.uk. These sources are ideal for people wanting to sell cheap cars in a hurry. They're not necessarily enthusiasts, they may just be selling on what, to them, is a daily runabout. If you're cunning, there are some real bargains to be had.
