1. Before removing the two downpipe securing bolts support the exhaust from underneath, don't let It hang.

2. Progressively loosen and take out the bolts securing the rocker pedestals, remove the rocker shaft.

3. Withdraw the pushrods keeping them In order, then slacken and remove the head bolts in the tightening sequence.

4. Next lift off the cylinder head complete with manifolds. It may be difficult to break the gasket seal.

5. With the head on a bench It Is easy to remove both the exhaust and Inlet manifolds. Clean mating surfaces.

6. Clean off the face of the cylinder head then check for possible warp, If excessive have head skimmed.

7. Using a wire brush clean out combustion chambers, excessive carbon can be scraped off with a screwdriver.

8. Use a valve spring compressor and remove the two cotters. Keep all components In strict order 1 to 8....

9. We used egg trays for this purpose, however you can use a cardboard box with holes punched in the top.

10. Grind valves manually or with the SPQR attachment shown. Remove any signs of pitting, then pencil....

11. ....four light marks on the seating, replace valve and turn through 180 degrees when all marks should rub off.

12. Before reassembling clean off block and pistons, we used clear adhesive tape and rag to cover any holes.
